Caprice No. 1 in E, Andante

By Niccolo Paganini

Known as 'Arpeggio' due to its utilization of the ricochet technique, it was dedicated to Henri Vieuxtemps. Emil Kross, violinist and pedagogue, writes the following instructions for the first caprice. In order to produce every note distinctly and with brilliant clearness, the four notes of each arpeggio must be taken simultaneously [with the fingers covering each string] and held for the duration of each chord combination. This caprice is effective for the rendition and mastery of spring-bow arpeggios and similar styles of bowing.
