2. Partita No.1 in B minor BWV 1002

By Johann Sebastian Bach

The solo partitas are similar to suites in that they are split into many movements. The B minor Partita has eight parts to it. It can be said that there are four movements, each followed by a fast section called 'Double' that acts as a variation on its preceding movement. Arrangements of the entire Partita as well as parts of it include Leopold Godowsky, Joachim Raff, Camille Saint-Saëns, Ignaz Friedman (all for piano), William Thomas Best for Organ, Carlos Salzedo for Harp, and for Guitar by Francisco Tárrega. Jeno Hubay suggests for the Double: "The double must sound very tender, light and graceful. Emil Kross provides, in his edition, some technical advice as well as some background to the titles - Allemanda: Old German round-dance of sately movement. Double 1: Broad strokes with the upper half of the bow. Corrente: A quick dance-measure in 3/4 time. Lightly thrown spiccato strokes in the middle of the bow. The notes marked [detache] in broad bows with the middle. Those marked [Spiccato] with lightly thrown staccato bowing. Double 2: Light wrist strokes with the middle of the bow. Sarabande: A slow dance-measure of Spanish origin. Somewhat resembling the Menuet; it is in 3/4 or 3/2 time, generally consisting of two movements. The chords [are to be played] nobly, with broad, long, weighty strokes. Double 3: Elegant and expressive bowings. Tempo Di Bourree: A French joyful dance in 2/4 time (here alla breve). Fresh and bold rendering. The chords and double-stops with great precision and clearness.
