Written for voice and piano in 1920, and reworked for violin in 1925 with the opus '35bis'. It was dedicated to Nina Koshetz, soprano opera singer who premiered some of the works in New-York. Pawel (Paul) Kochánski premiered the violin-piano adaptation. Prokofieff dedicated nos 1,3,4, and 5 to Kochanski, and dedicated no.2, Lento ma non troppo, to Cecilia Hansen - a violinist and friend of Serge.
